I would love to see him take on someone who could afford the fight! If one could discount the cost of legal fees it would make the situation a lot more interesting. I assume you could do that, at least to a degree. Your time is still worth something, even to yourself! Thanks for the "release". -[Steve]- Message #1680 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 12-Sep-88 18:56 From: Bill Sides To: Phil Katz Subj: Them versus Us Phil, Enjoyed the conversation the other day, wish it could have been prompted by better circumstances. As I told you, every vestige of the SEA products have been removed from all three computers here, and on my BBS (The Way Station, Charleston, SC) and I will be removing their protocols from all my telecomm progams (Telix, QuickBBS, etc). I also left them a terse but not abusive message indicating my displeasure of their actions, the removal of their software (both programs I had regi$tered, and ones available for dowload on my BBS) and my willingness to "sell" PKWARE products in my hobby and to those I consult with. I can't imagine what they hope to accomplish, but I can already tell they will find out what "consumer backlash" is all about (perhaps they should have tried a class or two in business or marketing). As I stated in my phone conversation, the checks in the mail (no cracks now) and I look forward to supporting your current and future efforts in any way I can. Sincerely, Bill Sides (372/1) PS don't forget to talk with Newlin about setting up BBS registration of your products. Message #1686 "PKWARE Messages" Date: 12-Sep-88 23:22 From: Jay Caplan To: All Subj: TRADEMRK.ARC To Phil, his lawyers, and everyone else here: I will be uploading a text file called TRADEMRK.ARC that contains numerous examples of the ARC terminology refering to compressed files *BEFORE* SEA even came out with their program! This should help to blow their present disgusting action against Phil right out of the water! It originated with a Sysop who ran a BBS before SEA released their program and he had programs posted with .ARC extensions that had been compressed. It makes very interesting reading...d/l it and pass it around! +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Jay Caplan Sysop of The Consultant BBS (718) 837-3236 12/2400 bps | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ Message #1688 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 13-Sep-88 00:18 From: Ted Decastro To: Phil Katz Subj: Re: Idea for PAKer Thank you for the consideration. I hope that the new format, free from the constraints of tradition, will allow something akin to the virtual drive or subdir format as did LBRDISK by Loupshinky (sp) in CP/M days. Some have started nameing the files creater by PKPAK with a .PAK extent - is this a new requirement. I wish to abide by YOUR requirements on PC-LINK - so I would like clarification. Thank-you. PS - If you would like another beta tester for the new program I would certainly appreciate the opportunity! I don't remember the full title, but someone on Exec-PC left a message about it lasy week. It would be quite interesting to see Thom take them on for violating his trademark. Or perhaps they could claim IBM stole his code! -[Steve]- Message #1707 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 14-Sep-88 16:28 From: John Tomczak To: Phil Katz Subj: QMAIL I LIKE THE QMAIL READER, BUT IT DOESN'T LIKE THE NEW "PK(UN)PAK UTILITIES--- DO YOU KNOW IF QMAIL IS COMING OUT WITH A NEW VERSION TO MATCH YOURS?/ INCIDENTLY, I THINK SEA SCREWED YOU! Message #1708 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 14-Sep-88 17:00 From: Robert Scott To: Phil Katz Subj: Suggestion for New Paker I have seen several suggestions as to features which you might include in your new pak program. What I would suggest is that you expand the scope, rather than the features. PKPAK could be the core of an excellent backup system if it could maintain the directory structure (which has already been suggested here) and format disks on the fly. Like another of your correspondents, I have about 40 meg of files and, hence, almost never back them up in total. It's not so much the time it takes, but the number of disks. An expansion of PKPAK could make my life a great deal easier. Good luck. I log onto a BBS that Mark Herring, author of Qmail, uses, so if you have any problems with Qmail let me know and I will try to pass them along to him. >Phil> Message #1723 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 15-Sep-88 04:40 From: Mark Fornoff To: Phil Katz Subj: new util Hi , Phil . There is also a lot of support in the Opus net I am in ( net 260 ) for you . I t is an oversimplification to merely say that Thom went too far . I am trying to get $ 45 together to send you now and I am encouraging others to do likewise . I wish you could have afforded to fight him . A veteran Opus sysop thought Thom's problems are financial , too , but that is what comes from being unresponsive to your customers' needs . The contempt action is a crock as far as I can see , and I hope you win . I wish I knew if he still had his board up , I would love to upload him about 5 copies of PK361 ( under different names ). For example, I have the CNEWSxxxx files that have examples inside them in their own arcs. Currently, I use the -v and get CNEWSxxxx.nws EXAMPLE.ARC EXAMPL2.ARC It would be nice to get something like: CNEWSxxxx.nws EXAMPLE.ARC FILE.C FILE.EXE FILE.OBJ FILE.DOC EXAMPL2.ARC PROG.C PROG.EXE PROG.OBJ PROG.DOC along with all of the other date that you have currently. Thanks, Paul Message #1849 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 20-Sep-88 20:17 From: Jim Anderson To: Phil Katz Subj: REGISTATION??? Phil, the way I read the SEA settlement agreement, I can send you money and designate it as being for the registration of a *NEW* compression utility when it becomes available, and thereby BYPASS the 6.5% royalty fee to SEA. Is that correct? If so, is it all right with you if I do it that way? Basically, I just want to get some money to you (and ONLY you, if possible). As far as I'm concerned, I can do without a "valid registration" for the PKPAK/UNPAK utilities. Please let me know how you feel about such an arrangement (who knows, it might become a fad!). By the way, how did you make out with T.H.'s latest farce? All the best. - Jim Message #1850 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 20-Sep-88 23:45 From: Tom Droege To: Phil Katz Subj: pkarc registration and new version Phil, First I like to say I agree with everyone on this board about how you were shafted... But, will I (as a registered user already) be informed of where your latest and I sure best packing program will be available. If you intend to charge an additional amount to currently registered user I would be glad to help in any way. Also, I would be happy to provide any beta testing services that you may require. I highly recommend the PKPAC package to all and encourage them to send in the very reasonable registation fee. Please, any information would be helpful. Thanks and keep up the good work. Depending upon when you sent in your registration and how many updates, if any, you have already received, you might also receive the new software in the mail too. >Phil> Message #1865 "PKWARE Messages" Message #1880 "PKWARE Messages" (RECEIVED) Date: 22-Sep-88 12:24 From: Francis Dorer To: Phil Katz Subj: New Program I will be looking forward to your new program, and I will (manually, if necessary) convert all of the files on my board to your new format. I have dumped all of the SEA software on my board. Come to think of it, that would be a nifty utility to include, CNVT2PAK, takes all of the files in the old obsolete format and converts them to yours. Keep up the good work. I'm sure that there is a special place in Hell reserved for those folks. Message #1908 "PKWARE Messages" Date: 23-Sep-88 19:21 From: Jim Anderson To: Phil Katz Subj: Re: REGISTATION???
