Msg # 3514 Dated 09-20-88 19:44:22 Security: 20 From: BRIAN ERST To: BRUCE WILSON Re: (R)SEA VS PKWARE While there was apparently another program in the old CP/M days that used the term "archive" (at least, that's what everyone on this board has led me to believe), by far the most often used term to describe putting multiple files into a single file in the pre-ARC days was the term LIBRARY. LU, NuLU and other derivative works all used this term, and did not (to my knowledge) ever use the term "archive". So, as far as SEA is concerned, the use of the term "archiving" and ARC was far different from the (then) current standard, which should give it some grounds for claiming it to be distinctively different from those other works. Gee, Bruce, does this mean if SEA had used the term ARK (deliberately misspelled) or SEA-ARC (appending initials), the trademark would be valid in your eyes? Perhaps they should have called it "zwiptology" and called the program ZWIPTO. But then, Zwipto would just be a normal abbreviation of More [Y],N,NS? ns "zwiptology", and therefore can't be a trademark... Just like Xerox! They should have NEVER called the process "xerography"! - Brian :-) Msg # 1584 to 3517 (H)elp, S)ince last, M)ine, or text) ([ENTER] quits)?
